January 25 -- North Practice Thoughts:
Sean Canfield
The North practice today was a bit of an eye-opener. In a way, it confirmed some feelings, but it also raised some questions.

Having not seen Terrence Cody in action yet, I won’t comment on how I feel about his draft stock, but he weighed in at 370 lbs. and looked every bit of. Hopefully he can show some athleticism that impressed so many this year for being such a large defensive tackle. After tomorrow’s South practice it will be a little clearer what kind of shape Cody is in.

Mike Iupati continued to impress during weigh-ins and practice. He appears to be in great shape and amongst North offensive lineman appeared to have the best footwork. At 325 pounds, Iupati is big enough to play right tackle, and I believe some scouts might be looking at the same thing. His footwork is incredible.

Oregon State’s Sean Canfield did not impress me, however. Although he posted terrific stats this year, his arm appeared weak and lifeless. His deep out routes were lofted and his fade routes were under thrown. Nothing Canfield did in practice made me feel he warrants an early pick.

Brandon Ghee, who has been thought of as a late first or early second-round pick has good size and great hands, but also looked unimpressive at practice. His footwork needed a lot of improvement. On several occasions, Ghee was caught tripping in his backpedal and looked a little heavy on his feet. Still, there’s a lot of practice left, and he could show improvement before the game.

Both South and North practices tomorrow should lead to a lot more analysis. Stay tuned.

LeGarrette Blount
Went to the North practice today. Sean Canfield looked awful. Heard one scout behind me say, "This guy has the worst arm I've ever seen." Canfield, Tony Pike, and Dan LeFevour were alternating in QB/WR drills throwing different routes. Pike, by far, had the best arm. He got a lot of zip on his throws and was able to squeeze in some nice deep out plays. LeFevour showed an adequate arm, but it wasn't anything to write home about. And Canfield had one of the weakest arms I've seen. He simply could not throw the out route. He would lob it to the sideline and it would be batted down by the defender every single time.

I really liked what I saw from LeGarrette Blount and Jacoby Ford. Both players looked really explosive. Blount showed good footwork in the running back drills and looked fast after measuring in at 245 pounds this morning. Ford stood out because his speed/quickness was by far the most impressive of any of the wide receivers, including Mardy Gilyard. Taylor Price, WR from Ohio, made some really nice catches today including a nice leaping grab on a fly route thrown by Pike.

Brandon Ghee got burned a couple of times in 1-on-1 drills and needs to work on his footwork, he looked sloppy today.

O’Brien Schofield went down with an apparent leg injury during practice. He needed to be helped off the field and he appeared in a lot of pain.
